Pacific Power is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Assistant Station Meter and Relay Technician. This position is a hands-on, in-the-field, training position similar to an apprenticeship. Successful candidates will work with or under the direction of Journeyman Technicians to learn the Meter and Relay Trade.  A period of two (2) years, as defined by labor management agreements, will be allowed to complete all study materials and examinations. The two-year training course is divided into eight quarters with each quarter consisting of bookwork and hands-on tasks, with a test administered at the end of each quarter. A passing score is required on all tests before advancing to the next quarter of training. All hands-on tasks will be performed during normal business hours; however bookwork will be completed outside of work.   Out-of-town travel will be required to attend training classes and to work with technicians from other areas in order to complete required tasks. Upon completion of the training course, assistants will be advanced to the Journeyman classification.

Responsibilities

 

The Assistant Meter and Relay Technician position is an in-training position for the role of Journeyman Station Meter & Relay Technician. The Assistant Meter & Relay Technician shall work with & under direction of a Journeyman Station Meter & Relay Technician & shall be allowed a period of two (2) years as defined by the labor management agreements, to complete study materials, examinations, & on-the-job training to qualify as a Journeyman Technician. A Journeyman Technician has a working knowledge of company substation protection & control schemes. A Journeyman’s duties are to install, maintain, adjust, test, troubleshoot & repair substation protection & control equipment which includes but is not limited to apparatus, meters, relays, controls & remote control equipment. 

 

  • Installing, commissioning, testing, adjusting, repairing & replacing protection & control equipment used in high voltage generation plants, transmission & distribution substations. This equipment includes but is not limited to electro-mechanical, solid state & microprocessor protection relays, Watt & VAR meters, recording instruments including Sequence of Event Recorders & Digital Fault Recorders, & control equipment for all substation equipment including circuit breakers, motor operated switches, transformers, load tap changers, voltage regulators, capacitor banks & reactors
  • Using computers extensively to communicate with substation equipment & to operate test gear
  • Accurately completing maintenance & commissioning forms & submitting them with all test records to the appropriate company departments
  • Routinely operate substation equipment & perform substation switching & grounding as necessary
  • Must be able to lift & move heavy objects exceeding 50 pounds
  • Demonstrate responsibility for tools, computer, test equipment, & vehicles assigned to them

 

Working conditions of this position include the following:

 

Technicians may work alone or in crews, which may include workers from another trade. Technicians may work under the direction of others or be required to direct the work of others, depending on the work being performed. Work may include adverse weather conditions and/or long hours during emergency conditions or to minimize impact to customers. The technician may be required to work in confined spaces or on elevated platforms, which can include bucket trucks, ladders, scaffolding, & elevated platforms. Work may be near moving mechanical parts, dust, fumes, noise, water, or in close proximity to cables & conductors energized above 600 volts

Requirements

 

  • A High School Diploma, GED or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Successful completion of a required written examination reflective of AC and DC electrical theory. (Material covered in chapters 1-5, 7, 12-14 in Schaum’s Outlines of Basic Electricity 2nd edition).
  • A valid driver’s license with a good driving record and the ability to acquire a Medical Examiner’s Certificate.
  • Willingness and availability to relocate to where a training position is currently available and possibly relocate again at the completion of the training. The current training locations are: Klamath Falls, Albany, Medford, Roseburg and Portland. A successful assigned candidate will train at that location and at the completion of the training will remain at that same location to fill a permanent position. A successful unassigned candidate will train at that location but at the end of the training period will be required to bid on and move to whichever location has a vacant permanent position. Bidding for permanent positions shall take place in a manner agreed to by labor/management for the assistant in Klamath Falls.
  • Ability to understand and comply with company policies and procedures.
  • Ability to follow safety rules and use PPE’s appropriate for work being performed.
  • Ability to communicate professionally and effectively, both verbally and in writing.

Preferences

 

  • Experience in installation and troubleshooting of motor controls and process instrumentation.
  • Working knowledge of AC and DC electrical theory.
  • Ability to troubleshoot, diagnose and repair electrical installations safely and effectively.
  • Knowledge of and the ability to safely use hand tools such as screwdrivers, plyers, wrenches, sockets and tape measures.
  • Knowledge of and the ability to safely use power tools such as drills, grinders, saws, heat guns, and soldering irons.
  • Knowledge of and the ability to safely use electrical test equipment such as volt meters, amp meters, ohm meters, Meggers and power quality analyzers.
  • Ability to read, understand and use electrical schematics.
  • Ability to read and comprehend technical manuals.
  • Basic knowledge of computers and ability to use programs such as Word, Excel, Outlook and Internet Explorer. 
  • PLC programming and troubleshooting experience.
  • A state-issued Journeyman Electrician’s license.
  • A college or trade school degree or certificate in the electrical field with applicable hands-on experience.
  • Military experience in the electrical field with applicable hands-on experience.
  • Experience in the electrical utility industry or applicable high-voltage experience.
  • Department of Motor Vehicles CMV (Medical Card)
