General Purpose

 

Direct and oversee the technical engineering resources within the company necessary to support the continued operations, reliability and resiliency improvement of the company’s electric substation, transmission and distribution systems. Includes responsibility for development and implementation of technical solutions, engineering guidelines and policies, material specifications, identify and implement advanced technologies integration to electric grid, construction standards and guidelines, and publication of all related handbooks, requirement manuals standards and guidelines relating to engineering, design, constructability, and maintainability of the company’s substation, transmission, distribution and metering system assets.  Responsible for selecting, coaching, and developing employees and management of employee salaries. Implements and supports Company programs and policies. Typically supervises both Manager level employees and all levels of engineers through principal grade.

Responsibilities

 

  • Develop, approve and implement effective standards for the design and construction of the company’s substation, transmission, distribution and metering systems that accommodate best practices and overall lowest total ownership cost.
  • Provide value added engineering and technical support and consultation services to electric operations relating to all aspects of electric substation, transmission and distribution systems.
  • Verify that standards are developed in accordance with national, state and local requirements.  
  • Oversee the development of technical specifications for Berkshire Hathaway Energy. 
  • Work in coordination with procurement to develop bid specifications for material purchases.
  • Direct distribution system engineering functions required for delivery of high quality energy service solutions, asset utilization services and asset performance services.
  • Represent the company in technical matters to state, local or industry associated organizations having the ability to influence the energy services business as needed for substation, transmission and distribution engineering policies and standards and smart grid activities.
  • Direct the development of policy, strategies and technical solutions involving automation that will improve the utilization of the system assets, lower ownership costs, improve system performance and overall quality of energy supply.
  • Oversee a group of technical engineers versed in complex power system operations, including disruptive technologies, that deliver expert consultation and engineering services to external and internal customers related to dynamic system operation.
  • Direct electric grid modernization organization and establish processes for development and adoption of cutting-edge T&D tools and technologies that enhance network resiliency, reliability and security.  
  • Develop process that improve electric grid resiliency to mitigate wildfire risk and oversees special  projects to improve electric grid reliability.
  • Direct matters related to the evolution and development of a progressive electric grid that may include distributed energy resources, energy storage solutions, electric vehicles with vehicle-to-grid integration, distribution automation schemes, targeted demand side management, complex power quality issues, intelligent end-use devices, proactive outage management solutions and other emerging technologies.  
  • Assess industry practices and regulatory changes that directly impact distribution and transmission system operations and create policies and procedures to address requirements and improvements.
  • Provide the guidance and leadership to ensure the department’s goals, objectives and activities add value to and support the company’s vision, values and strategic direction.
     

Requirements

 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university. 
  • A minimum of ten years experience in  engineering  
  • A minimum of three years experience in people management. 
  • In-depth knowledge of engineering economics, design codes and standards to apply engineering principles in a complex environment.
  • Management skills including the ability to establish objectives, execute policy, monitor resources, and manage the development or implementation of a system, program, or process.
  • Excellent leadership skills including directing and motivating individuals who may not be direct reports.
  • Excellent people skills that allow you to work effectively with diverse groups and individuals to gain the respect and trust from peers and associates.
  • Demonstrated administrative, management and supervisory skills to work effectively in a broad engineering technical environment. 
  • Strong knowledge of state and federal safety and environmental regulations (OSHA, Title V, etc.) and applicable codes such as ANSI, NESC, NEC, ANSI, and NFPA.  
  • Knowledge and experience in the design, installation, operation of utility infrastructure including distribution, substation and  transmission facilities from 46kV to 500kV 
  • Knowledge and experience with FERC/NERC/WECC compliance and reliability criteria
  • Proficient with the use of personal computers including spreadsheet, database, word processing, presentation applications and SAP.
  • Knowledge with distribution protection and control systems.

Preferences

 

  • Advanced Degree in engineering.
  • Licensed professional engineer.
  • Supervisory experience or demonstrated leadership skills is highly desirable.
  • Experience in budget preparation, analysis and cost tracking. 
  • Experience with process centered organizations, project management, contract administration and work planning and scheduling.
