General Purpose

Under general direction, the Associate Organized Markets Analyst provides analytical and operational support to PacifiCorp’s Energy Supply Management (ESM) team to ensure operational and financial objectives are met. Focuses on completing and delivering a wide range of data analysis projects spanning both existing and new problems. Provides support in the development of strategy and policy recommendations related to PacifiCorp’s activities in the California Independent System Operator (“CAISO”) markets and other regional ISO forums including the Energy Imbalance Market (“EIM”). Organizes, analyzes and visualizes data. Transforms data into insights using a wide range of tools and approaches. Supports PacifiCorp’s ongoing work of adding unprecedented amounts of new renewable generation and new storage resources to its system and works towards PacifiCorp’s mission of delivering customers clean, affordable and reliable power.

 

The Organized Markets Analyst provides analytical, operational and/or strategic support to the ESM team to ensure operational and financial objectives are met. Provides support in the in the development of strategy and policy recommendations related to PacifiCorp’s activities in the California Independent System Operator (“CAISO”) markets and other regional ISO forums including the Energy Imbalance Market (“EIM”). Supports PacifiCorp’s ongoing work of adding unprecedented amounts of new renewables and storage to its system and works towards its mission of delivering customers affordable and reliable power without greenhouse gas emissions.
 

Responsibilities of this position include the following:

 

Under general direction:

  • Assist in collecting, analyzing and visualizing data to 1) perform data refresh analyses using existing methodologies and models and 2) conceive of and develop analytical solutions to new operational, business or other issues that require analysis and insight. 
  • Own specific operational tasks (e.g., EIM bid submissions, EIM benefit calculations) with focus on continuous improvement.
  • Participate in a wide range of technical projects across the department focused on improving operational efficiency, turning data into insights and optimizing resource usage. 
  • Interface, liaise and collaborate with a wide range of stakeholders and departments within PacifiCorp to gather requirements, data, support and feedback on various assignments. 
  • Develop and maintain documentation that allows a third party to easily understand and replicate all aspects of analyses.
  • Participate in CAISO stakeholder processes or other initiatives which relate to or impact the merchant business unit’s interests in the EIM and other CAISO markets.
  • Provide support in analyzing EIM-related proposals, comments, white papers or other position statements produced through CAISO stakeholder processes which have the potential to impact the merchant business unit’s interests.
  • Gather, analyze and prepare supporting materials used for internal and external communications on the EIM which relate to or impact the merchant business unit’s interests, including data request responses, testimony, regulatory filings, etc.
  • Provide operational/vacation coverage to other ESM team members (e.g., EIM bid submissions, load forecasting, etc.)
  • Develop clear documentation of existing and new operational processes used within ESM.
  • Aid in the development of coherent presentations that effectively communicate the results of analyses using best practices in communicating technical information to non-technical audiences.
  • Coordinate internal dissemination of the results of analyses to affected business units and assist with development of downstream products or analysis.
  • Collaborate with the EIM Entity scheduling coordinator to communicate relevant EIM/CAISO requirements, processes, and changes.
  • Interface with the settlement/billing group related to EIM transactions. 

 

In addition to the above, the Responsibilities of Organized Markets Analyst include the following:

  • Support the fulfillment of EIM-related data requests. 

Requirements

 

The Requirements for the Associate include: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in economics, business, data analytics, finance, engineering, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Coursework and/or familiarity with econometrics and statistics. 
  • Ability to carefully and strategically time-manage priorities among a multitude of issues and processes.
  • Excellent communication (written and oral) and interpersonal skills involving the ability to work cross-functionally to understand business requirements, present alternatives, and present recommendations. 
  • Ability to perform effectively in high-pressure situations while keeping focused and calm.
  • Ability to provide timely assessments with limited information and/or assumptions.
  • Desire and demonstrated capability to learn complex information quickly and rapidly, and to apply new knowledge in day-to-day assignments.
  • Self-starter, problem solver and proactive team player who enjoys functioning in a highly fluid and tight-knit team-oriented environment.  

 

In addition to the above the Requirements for the Organized Markets Analyst position include the following:

  • A minimum of three years of directly related experience in an organized electric utility market or independent system operator or its substantive equivalent. 
  • Demonstrated project management and interpersonal necessary to manage cross-departmental projects
     

Preferences

  • A minimum of one year of directly related experience in an organized electricity market or independent system operator or its substantive equivalent.  
  • Experience and familiarity with data analyses, data structure and/or data visualization.
  • Specific knowledge of issues affecting individual utilities and control areas within the western interconnection, and within western wholesale competitive markets. 
  • Experience using Tableau, PowerBI or other data visualization tools
  • Familiarity with Visual Basic for Applications (VBA).
  • Familiarity with R (The R Project for Statistical Computing) or Python.
  • Knowledge of PacifiCorp’s system, regulatory environments or operations. 
  • Detailed knowledge of national, western interconnection, and northwest transmission/wholesale power business issues, competitive markets, and utility structures including RTO and ISO business practices
