Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy (SGRE) announced it was awarded the firm order from the EDF Renewables-Enbridge-wpd consortium for the 448-MW Courseulles-sur-Mer offshore wind power project. The installation will be located just more than 6 miles off the Bessin coast, in an area of Normandy, France.
SGRE on Feb. 22 said the wind turbine nacelles and blades for the Courseulles-sur-Mer project are scheduled to be produced at a Siemens Gamesa manufacturing plant being built in Le Havre, a port city in Normandy, where the English Channel meets the Seine River.
The project will feature SGRE’s SWT-7.0-154 Direct Drive offshore wind turbine (Figure 1). Installation and commissioning of the project is scheduled for 2024.
“We are delighted to again be the partner of choice for EDF Renewables, Enbridge, and wpd, and to deliver our second firm French offshore order to them,” said Marc Becker, CEO of the Siemens Gamesa Offshore Business Unit. “As we unlock more of the future of wind in France, we thank them for their vote of confidence in our technology, people, and ambitious growth plans in the country. Our facility in Le Havre and the Courseulles-sur-Mer project including service will provide local jobs and value for years to come.”
The Courseulles-sur-Mer project is the latest in a series of offshore wind installations using Siemens technology either under construction or planned off the French coast, including the 497-MW Fécamp offshore wind power project, a contract signed with the EDF Renewables-Enbridge-wpd consortium in 2020. The Fécamp project also will use 71 SWT-7.0-154 offshore wind turbines from Siemens.
SGRE has an additional firm order in France for the 496-MW Bay of Saint Brieuc offshore wind power plant with Ailes Marines, and also is supplying the 496-MW Dieppe le Tréport and 496-MW Yeu Noirmoutier offshore wind projects.
The Saint Brieuc project is Iberdrola’s first large-scale offshore wind power project in Brittany, in the northwest of France. It is scheduled to begin operation in 2023 and will use 62 SG 8.0-167 DD turbines (Figure 2) from Siemens.
Eoliennes en Mer Dieppe-Le Treport (EMDT), a joint venture of Engie (31%), EDP Renewables (29.5%), Sumitomo Corp. (29.5%), and the French public sector financial institution Caisse des Depôts et Consignations (10%), is scheduled to commission the Dieppe le Tréport installation this year. That wind farm also will use 62 SG 8.0-167 DD turbines, as will the Yeu Noirmoutier project.
The SGRE manufacturing facility under construction on the Quai Joannès Couvert in the Port of Le Havre will be used to supply Siemens Gamesa offshore wind projects in France and potentially abroad. The plant is scheduled to begin operation in the first half of 2022.
