Con Edison has said it is investing $ 125 million to build a new transmission line that will support economic development and the electrification of buildings and vehicles in Queens, New York. The Reliable Clean City—Long Island City project will connect the Vernon and Newtown substations in Long Island City.

Responsibilities

 

A Line Foreman is a Working Foreman assigned to a Headquarters responsible on a continuing basis for the direct supervision of an assigned crew and the work they perform. The normal complement of a regularly established line crew of three (3) or more workers shall include at least one (1) Journeyman Lineman in addition to the Foreman and may include a Utility Specialist, or Apprentice, or Apprentice-Qualified or Helper classification. The Line Foreman shall:
 
•    Be a qualified Journeyman Lineman
•    Supervise a crew when engaged in line or substation construction or maintenance work
•    Shall work with the employees under his or her supervision to the extent that it does not interfere with the supervisory responsibilities
•    Be responsible for job planning, work methods, equipment application, construction standards and job reporting for the jobs assigned.

The novel coronavirus (COVID-19) has put communities on lockdown and created a need for social distancing. Many are staying at home, but that’s not an option for the frontline workers running critical power transmission infrastructure and keeping the lights on.

How can utilities keep up with their operational and safety obligations with a reduced onsite workforce? Specifically, how can utilities maintain power line inspection and maintenance regimes, and what are the additional challenges for those in areas such as California, where COVID-19 collides with other threats, such as wildfire season?

Making Hard Work of Field Work

By definition, power transmission and distribution networks deal with long distances. At the best of times power line inspection entails despatching crews into the most remote pockets of a country or state, far from major population centres.
