How to Write a Resignation Letter: Format, Examples, Template

resignation letter

Whether you love or hate your present job, leaving for a better opportunity doesn’t necessarily mean pulling a silent exit. Stepping down is a big deal, and how you do it matters.

While we would all love to do a ‘Bridget Jones’ type resignation at least once in our lives, in reality, there is no need to flounce out on a dramatic note.  You don’t want to close any doors permanently, and certainly not completely close them with bolts, chains, and padlocks. It’s always best to part with your former employer on good terms, and that starts with writing a resignation letter.

Standard Resignation Letter Format

Just like other workplace coms, a job resignation letter should be concise, respectful, and well-structured.

The standard format is:

  • Header with your name, position, and contact details (if you’re filing a physical letter)
  • Recipient’s name, title, and company
  • Statement of resignation and final working day
  • A quick ‘thank you’ note
  • Professional sign-off

Legally, you don’t have to explain your reasons for leaving.…

writing a time off letter

Did you know that almost half of Americans who have paid time off (PTO) take less time than their employer offers? Some don’t want to fall behind in their work. Others fear letting down their bosses or colleagues.

Yet, taking time to decompress is important because it helps prevent physical and mental health issues, accumulated due to prolonged stress and fatigue. Rest then leads to better cognitive performance, which increases your productivity and satisfaction. So you should never feel guilty about filing a time off request — and here’s how you do it.

How to Request Time Off

Unfortunately, only three states (Maine, Nevada, and Illinois) have employment laws that mandate paid time off accumulation for employees. The rest leave the decision at the employer’s discretion. So the employer can legally deny your time off request unless it’s guaranteed by The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA).

Hence, you need to be strategic about how you frame your request and when you submit a time off request form.…

ATS compliant resume pro path

Over 90% of companies use applicant tracking software (ATS) to process job applications. It saves recruiters time but makes job applications more challenging for candidates. Avoid getting sacked by software with this ATS-compliant resume template.

Our template is specially optimized to ensure your resume passes all checks and gets ranked atop other submissions. Unlike regular resume templates, an ATS-friendly design doesn’t use photos or fancy fonts, as both are poorly rendered by ATS. But you get more space to showcase your top skills and experiences without making the document look cramped. To supercharge this design, we chose simple yet elegant fonts to ensure accurate document processing.

downloadable ATS resume template pro profile

When it comes to resume design, many applicants make one avoidable mistake: They go for a colorful, graphical resume template with a photo. These work like a charm when they land immediately in front of the recruiter, but they undermine their odds of getting past an applicant tracking system.

If you know the company uses software to process applicants, go for a toned-down ATS-friendly resume template. Although plainer in sight, this template can be effectively scanned by all popular systems for keywords and career details. Your submission won’t be filtered out due to poor design.

This template meets all the ATS formatting requirements: optimal font size and type, standardized syntax, a one-column layout, and no photo. What’s left for you is to list your work experience using bullet points, include relevant keywords from the job description, add your educational credentials, and check for spelling issues!

writing a salary negotiation email

If we’ve got one piece of valuable advice for job seekers it’s this: negotiate a salary offer.

Negotiating an extra $ 5K per year can make a huge difference over time. A 25-year-old, who entered the market at $ 35K will earn about $ 1.16 million more over 35 years (assuming annual 5% raises), compared to one who agreed to $ 30K.

(But of course, you can and must negotiate your salary with every new position!)

This post shows how to write a salary negotiation email to an extended job offer to secure a higher starting pay.

Sample Salary Negotiation Email

Hello Larissa Kay,

Thank you for getting back with an offer so soon. I’m thrilled at the prospect of joining Startup C, and my candidate experience with you has been incredible so far.

I’ve reflected on your offer and would like to explore a higher base pay of $ 100K. If you can bridge the gap, I’d be happy to sign right away.
