General Purpose

Evaluate the Day Ahead Resource Operations Plan and the California Independent System Operator (CAISO) Energy Imbalance Market (EIM) optimized market solution and execute the plans within the constraints of real-time system conditions.   Validate accuracy of load and variable energy resource (VER) forecasts, and dispatch system generation efficiently, to balance the electric system deliver the lowest net power cost solution to customers. Ensure compliance with all applicable reliability requirements of the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC), Western Electricity Coordinating Council (WECC), and Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). 

Responsibilities of this position include the following:

  • Maintain compliance with NERC/FERC/WECC and Open Access Transmission Tariff (OATT) requirements.
  • Maintain accurate unit capabilities in the Energy Supply Management System (EMS) and CAISO Market Model.
  • Reliably and economically balance current system load and resource requirements.
  • Determine available excess supply to be marketed by Marketing Function Employees (MFEs).
  • Determine and communicate required reliability-based energy transactions, to PacifiCorp Energy Transaction Traders. 
  • Collaborate with resource management, resource planning, and gas scheduling to develop the most efficient and reliable operating strategy.
  • Monitor the economic and reliable dispatch of the Company’s generating assets on an hourly basis.
  • Communicate plant dispatch instructions electronically and via verbal communication with plant operators. 
  • Identify internal system failures and implement corrective action.
  • Author and maintain best operating practices and procedures.
  • Maintain and update internal tools and calculations.
  • Inform the resource planning group, load and VER forecasting groups, and day ahead operations to areas of improvement in the Day Ahead Resource Plan. 
  • Maintain professional and effective relationships with generating plant and reliability operations personnel.

 

In addition to the above, the responsibilities of the Mid-level include the following:

  • Coach and train associate-level generation operators

 

In addition to the above, the responsibilities of the Senior-level include the following:

  • Determine available excess supply to be marketed by Marketing Function Employees (MFEs).
  • Create and maintain compliance and performance reporting.
  • Develop, maintain and update internal tools and calculations.
  • Coach and train mid-level and associate s generation operators.

Requirements for this position include the following:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Finance, Economics, Marketing or a related field; or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to obtain the NERC Balance and Interchange certification or equivalent within 90 days.
  • Ability to analyze market conditions and identify resource opportunities and resource management improvements.
  • Communication and interpersonal skills necessary to develop industry contacts, establish relationships, and negotiate outcomes.
  • Proficient with the use of personal computers and automated tools to support resource analysis activity.
  • Position work hours are non-standard.

 

In addition to the above, the requirements for the Mid-level include the following:

  • Minimum of two to three  years’ generation dispatch; or four to five  years’ experience in power system analysis/economic analysis or related field.
  • NERC Balance and Interchange certification or equivalent.
  • Leadership and teamwork skills to provide input into operational and policy decisions.

 

In addition to the above, the requirements for the Senior-level include the following:

  • Minimum of 5 years’ generation dispatch; or 7 years’ experience in power system analysis/economic analysis or related field.
  • Completion of required training hours to maintain NERC Certification.
  • Communication and interpersonal skills to motivate employees and use oral and written communication to communicate objectives and action plans.

Preferences:

  • Analytical skills in order to understand market conditions and to analyze resource opportunities.
