rock climbing hobby

Many people will tell you that hobbies don’t belong on a resume. They’ll say that it’s fluff and a waste of space.  After all, shouldn’t you keep work and play separate? Nope, not always!

Many employers seek out not just qualified people, but those who’ll bode well with the workplace dynamic, could bring different perspectives to the table, and vibe with the company’s values.

These factors don’t easily come across standard resume sections like work experience or education. But your list of hobbies and interests can hit that.

The key, however, is getting it right. Not every hobby or interest is worth including on your resume (e.g., “Netflix and chill”). So here are some pointers to help you determine when and what interests and hobbies to put on your resume.

Should You Put Hobbies on a Resume?

Yes, according to Nolan Church, former Google recruiter, and Head of Talent at DoorDash, listing hobbies on a resume is a good idea to differentiate as a candidate. …

internship in office

Even entry-level jobs require work experience—and most of us get it during a string of internships. Part-time, full-time, or summer-only internships give you the ability to prove your mettle at the workplace. You get to experience different roles, learn about corporate cultures, and start building your professional network.

Not only that, but you can also earn a salary or receive an internship stipend. OK, but which one’s a better deal? Here’s a detailed take from our team.

What’s a Salary?

A salary is a fixed amount you receive from your employer every two weeks or once a month. Interns can get salaries, but it’s not a legal obligation in the US. Employers can avoid paying salaries as long as the relationship meets the criteria, outlined in the Fair Labor Standards Act.

However, many companies do offer hourly or fixed-rate compensation. The average hourly pay for internship positions sits at $ 15.54 per hour. Some companies may go higher and offer a weekly, monthly, or fixed salary for the internship duration. …

reviewing resume during interview

You know the drill: a great resume should detail your “marketable” skills, work experience, and accomplishments. That’s not new information.  What many people don’t know is that they can choose how that information is presented. Yes! You have the power to format your resume in a way that paints you in the best light. And for some applicants, going for a functional resume may be a better option.

What is a Functional Resume?

A functional resume (also known as a skills-based resume) emphasizes your core competencies and skills, instead of how you’ve acquired these. Instead of presenting your jobs in the order of recency, you make a list of different categories of relevant skills, followed by an abbreviated work history that ties directly to your skillset, and a summary of your Education and professional training.

The above may sound ‘controversial’, since chronological resumes are the go-to for most applicants. But traditional recruitment is progressively giving way to skills-based hiring, driven by candidates’ proven competencies. …

No matter what you do, you find yourself overwhelmed with work and emails from colleagues that scream “urgent!”, almost every day. Of course, this leaves you drained and miserable. Time to put that trend to rest. While setting boundaries at work may seem challenging, it’s necessary for happiness, fulfillment, and productivity.

What Are Healthy Boundaries at Work?

Boundaries are limits we set for ourselves to protect our well-being and personal space. They’re like invisible limits that we use to communicate what sort of treatment is A-okay and what behaviors feel somewhat uncomfortable.

At work, you may set personal boundaries around your:

  • Personal life and matters you’d rather keep private (e.g., anything to do with your family).
  • Availability, like specific hours when you’re available for work-related matters (e.g., not answering emails on vacation).
  • Workload expectations around how soon you can complete certain tasks (e.g., politely pushing back on an unrealistic deadline).
  • Physical preferences such as saying you feel uncomfortable with hugs or discouraging unannounced drop-ins to your office.
