General Purpose

Develops advanced distribution system engineering studies, plans, specifications, calculations, evaluations, design documents, and performance assessments associated with the planning, design, licensing, construction, operation, and maintenance of the company’s generation, transmission, distribution, telecommunication, or other utility facilities/systems. Independently, applies prescribed methods and standard practices in performing all phases of projects and assists other engineering staff on more complex projects. 
    
This position will support the configuration of advanced distribution management system (ADMS) applications, validate the transmission and distribution network model, ensure accurate power-flow results and support SCADA and field device control configuration alignment. This role will assist in providing on-going monitoring and configuration of DMS alarming, configure, and tune advanced applications including, but not limited to, integrated volt/var optimization (IVVO), fault location, isolation, and supply restoration (FLISR), and support the use of ADMS to manage switching on the distribution grid. The job will also include monitoring performance of ADMS functional applications, support the introduction and development of new advanced applications, troubleshooting issues, assisting control center operators with complex grid switching issues, and training by providing engineering support for the operator training simulator.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities for the Senior Engineer II position include but not limited to:  

•    Uses & applies technical standards, principles, theories, concepts, & techniques to perform activities/assignments that may include a variety of complex features such as conflicting design requirements, unsuitability of conventional materials or methods & difficult coordination requirements.
•    Supports the development of technical documentation (including but not limited to designs, testing, calculations, reports, standards, etc.) Utilizes & may assist with the development of procedures requiring a broad knowledge & proficiency in a specialty area & has a general knowledge of related disciplines.
•    Provide ongoing technical support for project activities within areas such as operations, maintenance, testing/diagnostics and regulatory. May provide field engineering oversight and/or direction for activities such as commissioning, testing, inspections, etc.
•    Provide technical support for ADMS, grid analysts, SCADA engineers.
•    Act as a lead/expert in the work group; train and mentor associate and career level engineers, technicians, and drafters. 
•    Recommend alternative engineering solutions to management for distribution system modifications to meet business needs.  
•    Deliver on commitments and manage outside engineering services to accomplish the assigned work.

 

In addition to the responsibilities for the Senior Engineer II position, the Principal Engineers responsibilities include but not limited to:  

•    Independently conduct highly complex electrical engineering research studies and technical analyses in areas of distribution system expertise not commonly available or obtainable in the competitive engineering market. 
•    Provide technical oversight and guidance to engineering staff and region system operations.
•    Lead project teams in the development of critical distribution system electrical engineering solutions.    
•    Provide technical expertise for critical distribution system facility components. 
•    Serve as a company expert in the design, operation and maintenance of the distribution electric grid and provide authoritative consultation and recommendations to senior management. 
•    Develop detailed design specifications and prepare bid packages for external engineering services and similar contracts to support the needs of the business. 
•    Review, investigate and evaluate system and equipment performance, tests and analyses performed by senior Engineering staff. 
•    Participate in government, industry, collegiate and other applicable associations or work groups which have the ability to influence or set policy impacting the future of our utility.
 

Requirements

Requirements for Senior Engineer II position include the following:
•    Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from an accredited college/university.
•    A minimum of six or more years’ experience in industrial power systems or electric utility power systems.
•    Advanced technical degree or electrical professional engineer (PE) license required, or 8 years of directly applicable engineering experience required.
•    Demonstrated broad knowledge and application of principles in area of electric utility electrical engineering.
•    Project management and leadership skills including the ability to work as a team member, to maintain project timelines, budgets, and deliver on commitments.
•    Understanding of company’s business, and relevant policies, procedures, and practices.
•    Knowledge of applicable federal, state, local laws, regulations, and the National Electric Codes.  
•    Ability to perform effectively in high-pressure situations while maintaining focus and calmness.
•    Demonstrated communication and interpersonal skills involving the ability to work cross-functionally to understand requirements, present alternatives, and recommendations. 
•    Proficient with the use of personal computers including automated tools.

 

In addition to senior engineer II, the requirements for the Principal Engineer position include the following:
•    Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from an accredited college/university.
•    A minimum of 15 years industry experience as a practicing electrical engineer, including experience performing highly technical work of a specialized nature. 
•    A PE license is required.
•    Highest level of communication and interpersonal skills involving the ability to work cross-functionally to understand requirements, present alternatives, and recommendations.
•    Expert knowledge and application of principles in area of electric utility electrical engineering specialty.

Preferences

•    Electrical engineering experience specific to industrial power systems or electric utility power systems.
•    Knowledge of distribution system equipment.
•    Knowledge of distribution system operations.
•    Knowledge of energy management system.
•    Knowledge of CYME modeling tool.
•    Knowledge of Cadops/netCadops.
•    Knowledge of an energy management system.
•    Knowledge of power quality equipment and software
•    Knowledge of ASPEN Oneliner

In addition, the preferences for the Principal Engineer include:
•    PMP Certification or other Project Management Institute (PMI) recognized certification.
•    Master’s degree in electrical engineering from an accredited college/university.
