Entergy: Hurricane Ida Took Out Eight Critical High-Voltage Transmission Lines

The post Entergy: Hurricane Ida Took Out Eight Critical High-Voltage Transmission Lines appeared first on POWER Magazine.

Moving quickly after devastating winds from Hurricane Ida on Aug. 29 took out eight critical high-voltage lines and blacked out New Orleans, Jefferson, and two other Louisiana parishes, Entergy hashed out two options. One—the “preferred solution”—was to restore some of the critical transmission lines that tie Greater New Orleans to the larger MISO grid, and the second was to create an “island” that would temporarily isolate the Greater New Orleans region from MISO.

Entergy ultimately went with a pairing of the two. As restoration crews set out to repair transmission structures, Entergy established a temporary “standalone grid” powered mainly by the 128-MW New Orleans Power Station in Eastern New Orleans and Ninemile 6 in Westwego. As the company noted, the May 2020-commissioned New Orleans Power Station—a reciprocating engine plant—was designed to assist with storm restoration, given its self-start capability and ability to ramp-up to full capacity in a few minutes.…

Entergy Texas Breaks Ground on New 993-MW Combined Cycle Plant

Entergy Texas on February 15 began construction of its first new power plant in 40 years. The Montgomery County Power Station (MCPS), located in Willis, will be a 993-MW combined cycle gas turbine plant, adjacent to the existing Lewis Creek Power Plant.

Entergy Texas is part of Entergy Corporation, which provides power to about 3 million customers in Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas. The company in a statement said “the facility will provide a new source of reliable, low-cost and clean energy to meet the growing power demand across Southeast Texas.” The plant is expected to enter commercial operation by mid-2021.

Sallie Rainer, president and CEO of Entergy Texas, at Friday’s groundbreaking said, “Southeast Texas is growing, and Entergy Texas needs to invest now to power that growth. By providing reliable, affordable power, we can meet our customers’ needs today, while laying the foundation for future growth across our region.”

Entergy Texas has said the new plant, with cleaner and more efficient combined cycle technology, will save its customers about $ 1.7 billion in energy costs over the next 30 years.…

Entergy Gives Palisades Nuclear Plant Five More Years to Run

September 28, 2017

| Industry News

Entergy Corp. will keep the Palisades nuclear power plant in Covert, Michigan, open until the spring of 2022, owing to a shortfall in recovery granted to Consumers Energy by state regulators.

In a bid to actively exit the merchant nuclear power business, investor-owned Entergy had decided to shutter the 798-MW plant by October 1, 2018.  “Market conditions have changed substantially, and more economic alternatives are now available to provide reliable power to the region,” it said when it announced its decision about a year ago.

The decision came as a surprise because Entergy has a power purchase agreement with Consumers Energy—Michigan’s largest utility and the principal subsidiary of CMS Energy—which committed the company to buying nearly all the power generated at Palisades through April 2022. Entergy reasoned the plant’s closure could save Consumers’ customers as much as $ 172 million over four years, even after Consumers paid Entergy $ 172 million to terminate the contract.

On September 22, however, the Michigan Public Service Commission granted Consumers a recovery of only $ 136.6 million of the $ 172 million it requested for the buyout of the power purchase agreement. …

| Industry News

Entergy Corp. announced on July 13 that it is in discussions with Exelon Corp. concerning the potential sale of the James A. FitzPatrick Nuclear Power Plant in Scriba, N.Y.

The news comes following the release of the New York Department of Public Service’s proposal to subsidize zero-emissions attributes of upstate nuclear power plants, including FitzPatrick (Figure 1).

Entergy plans to close the 838-MW single-unit facility on January 27, 2017. The company said its decision was based on “the continued deteriorating economics of the facility.” Source: Entergy Corp.

Entergy announced on November 2, 2015, that it would retire the FitzPatrick plant. Key drivers cited by the company included “significantly reduced plant revenues due to low natural gas prices, a poor market design that fails to properly compensate nuclear generators like FitzPatrick for their benefits, as well as high operational costs.”

Today, Entergy said its discussions with Exelon are consistent with its commitment to consider any viable option that would allow FitzPatrick to remain in operation.…
