Death Toll Expected to Rise After Explosion at India Thermal Plant

An explosion at a coal-fired power plant in India has killed as many as 18 people and injured about 100, according to news reports. The blast, which occurred November 1 at the Feroze Gandhi Unchahar Thermal Power Station, was apparently caused when a boiler pipe burst in a 500-MW generating unit that came online in March of this year.

Police confirmed the total number of dead and said they expect the death toll and number of injured may rise because other people were trapped in the plant, which has been shut down. The plant employs 870 workers.

NTPC, the plant’s operator and India’s largest power utility, said in a statement: “There was sudden abnormal sound at 20 mt. elevation and there was an opening … from which hot flue gases and steam escaped affecting the people working around the area.” The NTPC statement also said “an unfortunate accident in the boiler of 500MW under trial unit of NTPC – Unchahar occurred this afternoon.…

Cost Overruns at Vogtle Expected to Soar

Georgia Power officials say the utility continues to work with its partners in the troubled Vogtle nuclear plant to firm up construction timelines and determine the costs to complete two new units at the facility. At the same time, a group opposed to the project and two long-time project consultants say ballooning costs should put an end to the plan.

A recent report from the consultants—William Jacobs, Jr., the project’s independent construction monitor since 2009, and Steven Roetger, the GPSC’s lead analyst for the project—to the Georgia Public Service Commission (GPSC) said the Vogtle project, already billions of dollars over budget and years behind schedule, is not economically viable, with a recommendation it should be abandoned.

The news comes just days after Southern Co., parent of Georgia Power, and Westinghouse reached a deal in which Westinghouse parent Toshiba agreed to pay Southern $ 3.68 billion to keep the project moving forward and continue the process of moving project management at Vogtle Units 3 and 4 from Westinghouse to Georgia Power.…

U.S. LNG Exports Surge in 2016—But Not Where They Were Expected

The U.S. took a big step toward becoming a major exporter of liquefied natural gas (LNG) in 2016 as Cheniere Energy’s Sabine Pass export terminal in Louisiana came online early last year and upgrades to the Panama Canal that opened in June made shipments to the Pacific region considerably easier. Data from the Department of Energy (DOE) through December 2016 show the U.S. exported 109 billion cubic feet (Bcf) of LNG through December 16, an average of about 0.3 Bcf/d for the year as a whole.

But the predominant destinations were not what most experts had predicted. Despite signs that U.S. LNG would seek out high-priced markets in east Asia and lower-priced-but-still-attractive markets in Europe, the majority of exports went somewhere else entirely: Latin America.

DOE data show that only two shipments went to Europe (one to Spain and the other to Portugal) while only a single one went to China, for a total of just 9.7 Bcf. Four shipments went to India, totaling 13.8 Bcf.…
