How to Decline an Interview Without Leaving the Wrong Impression

Finding a job means doing a fair share of interviewing. Generally, job seekers score one interview for every six applications submitted. But your calendar may look much busier if you have an in-demand skillet or heaps of work experience. This means you’ll have to decline some interviews. But how do you do it professionally? Here’s our advice. 

When to Decline an Interview? 

Before you break the news to your point of contact, give the decision another thought. Passing on an interview just because you’re feeling nervous or your impostor syndrome kicks in isn’t the wisest move. Likewise, if you don’t know much about the company or the industry, an interview can provide you with some perspective.  

That said, there are also cases when declining an interview invitation is the best course of action: 

  1. You’ve accepted another offer job offer.  You can confidently clear out your calendar if you’ve already signed a work contract with another company and fixed a start date.

Your application

Often a resume lists the start and end dates of employment. If your job ended within a short time frame, this would be a flag that something occurred. They will, at the very least, assume the role or organisation was the wrong fit for you. It won’t, however, indicate who ended the employment relationship. If you specify the reason for leaving after every role listed, you can write ‘job came to an end’ or something similar rather than blatantly saying fired.…

RWE Will Close Wales Plant, Leaving UK With Four Operating Coal Units

German utility RWE on August 1 announced it will close its last coal-fired power plant in the UK. The closure of the Aberthaw B power station in south Wales, scheduled by the end of March 2020, means just four coal plants will be operating in the UK. The plant originally was scheduled to be shuttered in 2021.

Roger Miesen, chief executive of RWE’s generation business, said in a statement Thursday: “This is a difficult time for everyone at Aberthaw power station. However, market conditions made this decision necessary.”

The UK has been moving on from coal-fired generation over the past few years, and less than 5% of the country’s power came from coal last year. The UK earlier this year went a week without using any electricity from coal.

The UK government has said all coal-fired generation in the country must end no later than 2025 to help meet climate targets. Several plant closures have been announced in recent months; EDF Energy, the London-based utility, in February said it would close its Cottam coal plant in September.…
